What Causes Yeast Infection?

Posted by Andrea on May 06, 2010

In order to understand what causes yeast infection you need to be aware of all the symptoms of the disease and how to prevent it from further spreading. Researches have proved that women are mostly affected by yeast infections. Symptoms of yeast infection are also found in men though quite rarely.

So What causes yeast infection?

Yeast infection is mainly triggered by an excess growth of a unique kind of a fungus known as Candida, commonly recognized as yeast. Small harmless quantities of yeast are generally present inside the mouth, digestive tract as well as inside the vagina. This infection crops up as soon as the body’s pH concentration begins to change due to some outside influence. For instance, use of antibiotics for the treatment of an infection, excess weight gain, menopause, use of steroids, diabetes, wearing of close-fitting underwear made of lycra or nylon, HIV infection and pregnancy are some of the factors that are responsible for causing yeast infection in women.

Symptoms of yeast infection are severe itching in the vagina region, usually accompanied with burning sensation, which intensifies during urination. Sometimes there will be a white creamy discharge. Another symptom of yeast infection is intense swelling.

In order to diagnose the infection properly it is also very important to be aware of what does a yeast infection look like?

What a yeast infection looks like is mainly determined by which body part gets affected by the disease. If it’s in the vagina region, then it will appear as a whitish odorless discharge, which is observable from outside together with severe vaginal pain and itching in the course of sexual intercourse or urination. If it forms between the toes and finger areas, then it appears as a desiccated red patch of skin that causes an itchy sensation. If the infection develops inside the mouth then it looks like a white patch of skin, which has a red patch on the top.

There are several ways of preventing yeast infections from growing. The most common ways of preventing yeast infections are briefly mentioned below.

  1. Keep the vaginal or genital area dry. A wet area acts as a breeding ground for yeast infection.
  2. Keeping sugar levels low. Excess presence of sugar level in the body tends to trigger yeast infection.
  3. Avoid eating pie, white bread, cake and other sweet dishes.
  4. Avoid wearing skin tight underwear especially those made from lycra or nylon.
  5. Certain types of deodorants and powder also need to be avoided.

There are certain effective home remedies for yeast infections treatment.

  1. Regular application of vinegar mixed with water on the infected areas can prevent the growth of the disease.
  2. Application of garlic can reduce the itchy sensation.
  3. Daily consumption of yogurt or curd can help to minimize the development of the harmful yeast microorganisms.
  4. Daily drinking of buttermilk can also prove to highly beneficial.
  5. One of the most important home remedies for yeast infections is the consumption of the extraction of olive leaf together with the extraction of grapefruit seed mixed with water.
