Health and Fitness Tips for Pregnant Women

Posted by Andrea on Mar 31, 2010

It is commonly known that nutrition for pregnancy is a critical part of a pregnant woman’s life. It is also crucial for the health of both the baby and mother, as the nutritional needs of a woman change radically during this period of time. These different needs occur due to the overall changes that take place in the body, but also due to the increased needs of the developing fetus.

The body of a pregnant woman undergoes serious changes and lots of stress. Pregnancy inevitably increases the need for a particular diet and nutrition plan, rich in vitamins and minerals. We all know that health and fitness are important issues for women.  However during pregnancy a women’s body does undergo significant emotional and physical changes and they therefore need to pay additional attention to themselves and their overall physical state.

Consulting with a doctor is the first thing a women should do, when she finds out that she is pregnant. The doctor will be able to give you valued information on the proper nutrition for pregnancy and organize a fitness plan.  By implementing this fitness and nutritional plan as soon as possible is vital for the health of the mother to be and the development of the fetus.

Fitness and health, nutrition and pregnancy are two terms that are directly associated to one another. The first three months of a pregnancy are the most important, because this is when the baby’s organs and brain begin to develop. The appropriate nutrition for pregnancy can eliminate or at least minimize the potential risks of birth defects and malformations. It can also help women feel stronger and withstand this harsh period of time. In any case, the biggest part of miscarriages occurs during the first three months of the pregnancy.

Taking pregnancy vitamins is considered to be mandatory for pregnant women today; it also ensures the baby gets the right vitamins as well. Prenatal vitamins are not the same as the supplements/vitamins we take in our everyday life.  It is therefore recommended to consult with a doctor prior to any purchase to ensure you buy the right ones.

Exercising has been prohibited to pregnant women for years. However, the last 10 years or so, physicians, gynecologists and fitness experts started suggesting exercises for pregnant women, because being fit is considered essential for the fetus and the mother. In addition, the right exercising program can help women avoid excessive weight gain during the first months of the pregnancy.

Nutrition for pregnancy should be taken under serious consideration; women should avoid everything that could prove to be detrimental to the developing fetus, especially during the first crucial months.  Right food selection, health products like vitamins and supplements, combined with the right exercises can perform miracles for pregnant women, both during and after the pregnancy.
